Education

Emerson in his essay discusses many great and strong points to prove his point that would greatly make American education better for the masses of children learning.  Back years from now education was all about actually teaching the child to make the child have a better life, but now teachers find alternative ways to teach rather than the standard way.

In paragraph 12, Emerson asserts that "Our modes of Education aim to expedite, to save labor; to do for masses what cannot be done for masses, what must be done reverently, one by one: say rather, the whole world is needed for the tuition of each pupil."  In this statement, I understand that Emerson is saying that our modes of education now strive to speed up learning, lessen teachers work, and to teach a large group of people what cannot be done for that group, but instead being taught one on one.  Also, he is saying that the world is needing the instruction of each pupil, which means that each student must be well disciplined and educated so that they can go far in life.

Emerson's description of education shows that teachers speed up the learning process and that they don't teach students as a class anymore, but teach each child seperately.  In today society, public education is still being taught like Emerson's description in some places.  At my high-school, as well as several others, teachers are creating alternative learning programs such as, mastery learning, to let those who are ahead of the rest of the class go on and not get held back.  This way of learning lets kids lose that learning experience as a class and gain the feeling that they can accomplish all the schooling they need without a teacher's help, and if they need it they can get that one on one time alone with the teacher.  On the other hand, teacher's do sometimes keep that class or mass teaching to keep the whole class on the same page, and not let one of two people feel left out or not as important because they're not as far ahead as everyone else.

Therefore, that is my opinion on what I believe that Emerson means in his quote from his well known essay Education.  Teachers to me are doing a terrific job of teaching kids the things they need to know later on in life, but I believe that what we do learn is lost in that long break we have and then the learning experience is somewhat forgotten.  The modes of teaching Emerson described, in my opinion, are being taught throughout the United States in many Junior High and Senior High schools.

Advertisement Analysis

The ad my group and I choose for this english assignment was chocolate milk.(http://adflip.com/addetails.php?adID=14404&showLargeJpg=yes)  Many people view the milk ads, like in most schools and lunch rooms, are very boring to look at every day for a few years, but this ad brought several great examples of ethos, logos, and pathos.  The milk advertisement focuses mainly on the lines of nobody can live without milk, it's a building block of life.  The use of the famous show Fear Factor's host, helps the reader understand the serious reality of the importance of drinking milk, the use of a television shows host makes the advertisement seem well thought of and well done.

Ethos, which is one of the commonly used persuasive appeals, is demonstrated by the use of the host of Fear Factor this is seriously presented in the ad to show how serious milk is.  Celebrity endorsements help the reader feel better about the ad because it gives the product more credit.  When most people see the use of a celebrity or host on the front of the ad then buyers see this as an opportunity to be just like them.
Another example of ethos is how the guy in the ad's career on Fear Factor proves he's fearless, and that gives the reader an idea that if they drink chocolate they can be fearless too.  This ad along with most other ads are very misleading because they mislead consumers of products to think that if they buy this they can be a celebrity too, but in reality they can not.

Another one of Aristotle's rhetorical appeals, pathos, which is emotions, is used in the chocolate milk advertisement.  One of the most obvious uses of the persuasive tactic, pathos, is the ad features a very handsome man in the center of the ad, drawing in the attention of women.  Women would view this man, from Fear Factor to be very handsome and good looking, feeling this way would make them happy, thus the use of pathos.  The emotion on the man's face however could bring about several different emotions.  The man in the ad looks very intimidating and serious and this brings the reader or viewer and sense of fear, causing them to be tricked into thinking that chocolate milk is actually not as good as the ad leads you into thinking it is.  This use of emotion can bring about several different views from different people and that's how many companies make their money because most people view it as there is a hot guy lets buy this.

Logos, the logical one of Aristotle's rhetorical appeals is rarely used in this advertisment for chocolate milk.  The main use of logos in this ad is the quote " my only fear is running out" this quote lets the reader know that the guy in the picture isn't just some regualr person, but the host of the show Fear Factor.  The way the viewer views this is that whenever they see that not only they as buyers drink this, but also celebrities do too, then they will buy it more to be just like the celebrity mentioned.  The hidden logic in this ad helps the reader to understand the meaning of the advertisement better persuading them to buy it.

By using all three of Aristotle's rhetorical appeals, the writer of the ad is able to reach out to more than just milk drinkers, but to anyone who loves the show Fear Factor and it's host.  All these persuasive methods: emotion, logic, and credibility, are used to create a well made, and truthful ad that buyers can look at and know that they are actually buying the right product, rather than getting severaly tricked into buying something they themselves do not need.

Sense:Empathy

Empathy- "the ability to understand and feel the feelings of others"

For my experiment, I chose to test my feelings for the other people around me, or empathy for short.  To me, my first thought was that I'm a nice person who cares about others so I should score above average easily, well to my suprise when you think you know yourself you realize you actually might just suprise yourself.    This test to me seemed to be quite simple and easy to understand and it made me realize how hard it is to acutally think and fully understand what each question was asking and how to answer according to which option best fit me.  The thing that probably helped me most while taking this quiz was the choices it gave me for each question: defintely agree, slightly agree, slightly disagree, and defintely disagree.  Those few choices basically saved my life because it was simply do I agree or disagree, and then I had to dig deep inside myself and decide do I feel strongly towards agreeing or disagreeing or do I just kinda agree or disagree.  The easiest questions for me were "I live life for today rather than the future" (defintely agree), and "Seeing people cry doesn't really upset me" (defintely disagree) both of these questions to me seemed to be quite important and I felt strongly about both topics life and feelings for others.  Some of the questions I found to be difficult to understand were "I find it difficult to explain to others things that I understand easily, when they don't understand it first time" (slightly agree) also, "When I was a child, I enjoyed cutting up worms to see what would happen" (defintely disagree), to me this question was confusing because it was random and I couldn't quite understand how it reffered to empathy.  Lastly, the difficult questions that I had to put lots of time and thought into answering were "People often tell me that I went too far in driving my point home in a discussion (slightly agree), this question brought me to thinking of how much thought I put into a conversation before actually speaking.  Another difficult question was "When I talk to people, I tend to talk about their experiences rather than my own" (slightly disagree) I chose slightly disagree mainly because whenever I talk to friends I always talk about my problems and try to understand and listen to my friends.

As I went through each and every question it brought me to think about every little detail I put into a conversation with my friends and do I treat them with enough understanding and feeling.   Before clicking the "Get Answers" button at the end of the test I quickly went over each question throughly to make sure I trusted my first answer perfectly which of course I didnt.  Then after viewing the results I realized just how disappointing the results to a quiz can be.  Then millions of questions rushed through my mind am I a terrible person? does this mean that I'm a bad friend? should I pay for attention to everyone around me?  The questions running through my two parted brain were endless it seemed like I could feel a headache coming even though it's just a test, it doesn't mean anything.  That turned out to be an understatement this test meant the world to me and I couldn't believe how my results turned out, but after dissecting every little bit of spirit I had left within me I took the courage to move on.  I believe that this test took a toll on my life and that it brought a new perspective to my mind and how i'll react around others and how i'll treat others as well as myself.

"Dreams" are the things with wings

"Dreams" are the things with wings
That nest in mind
And chirp a song without thought
And continues day by day

And faliure in the heart is sensed
And hope must be the devil
That brought so much happiness

It's been thought of in the brightest minds
And on the biggest mountain
Yet never in excess
It never asked for a conversation with me

Harlem Poem

What happens to happiness
Does it stick around
like a sunny day
or like a bestfriend whenever your feeling down
And then sadness
Does it come and go like a stray dog
or stay forever
like a bird after a storm
Maybe it just appears in your heart when you need it to
like the pain of losing a loved one
or does it just willow in the wind

Antigone Character Analysis

Sophocles's greek play "Antigone" is a story about two sisters that have no family left, and they're dealing with the burial of their recently dead brothers.  Everything for them is as good as life can get given the circumstances, except for the fact that the king, Creon, declared a law stating that the dishonored brother, Polynices should not be buried.  According to Creon if anyone were to be brave and try to bury the unliked man Polynices then they would suffer a most tragic death of public stoning.  One of the sisters, Antigone, is a woman who has suffered many hardships in her life, that left her without family or friends.  Antigone is quite stubborn and also rebellious, but on top of that she presents determination and loyalty towards her family that she has.

From the beginning of the play all the way to Antigone's death, she shows how stubborn and rebellious she is.  To Creon, Antigone exhibts several behaviors, Creon speaks of Antigone as being "rebellious" and very "hateful".  The young yet spiritied woman, Antigone is very rebellious based on the fact that throughout the story she's going against the law and peoples advice and orders.  Also she shows her rebellious ways in being angry and argumenative towards Creon, when she should be respectful to him since he is her uncle and the king, even if he may not deserve it.  Antigone says to her sister "ill bury my brother..... your brother too, though you reguse! I'll not be found a traitor."  In this strong yet dramatic dialogue between the two sisters, Antigone shows how stubborn attitude of going ahead and burying Polynices even though Ismene, her sister advises her not to do it for she will be killed.  This type of attitude is what gets Antigone into all kinds of pickles or trouble in this amazing story, but she's a very strong girl and her stubborn attitude helps her to argue and fight for what she believes is right.

Throughout the story Antigone presents her determination to give her bother, Polynices, a proper burial, since that's what he truly deserves.  To Ismene, Antigone is a "madwoman" for risking her life, but Antigone with her stubborness ignores her and demands she " will bury him" and proves that "it seems fair to die doing it."  The dialogue between Ismene and Antigone claims she won't stepdown from the idea of burying Polynices, which makes her seem determind because she's gonna hlep her brother when nobody else will.  Antigone being so strongly determined to bury her brother is willing to put her life onthe line for her fmaily in order to not seem to be a traitor and will do whatever it takes to get the job done.  As Antigone says "I honored you well in the eyes of the wise", also "I have won myself the rewards of impiety."  Determination is what led her to bury her brother rather than leaving him to the bird, like Creon wanted.  Antigone's determined ways give her a very strong and poise position in society and also a strength that makes her start something she finishes no matter how long it takes or the consequences that tag along with it.

Loyalty is what Antigone presents quite often to her family, not only because she's told to but because she loves and cares for her family more than any law in itself.  In Creon's eyes, Antigone is considered to be a "fool" and a "child" for committing the crime and mainly going against the kings law.  She should not be labeled or considered a "fool" or a "child" when she is being a big girl and bravely fighting for what she believes to be the right thing to do, which is the duty of burying her brother.  To Antigone being loyal and caring for family comes before any stupid law that anyone decrees possibly even the gods.  As the story goes on, Antigone says to Creon "I assert that I did it, I do not deny it."  This quote gives evidence that she is being loyal and brave for going and standing up for what is right and not backing out because of the consequence that is coming for her.  In the dialogue between the king and Antigone her loyalty brings her a long way and possibly gives her a fighting chance at not getting killed right then and there but possibly getting a genteler and slower punishment for the unfair crime.

Antigone presented her stubborn and rebellious qualities, during her lifetime, also her determination along wiht her loyalty brought her great values to which others see her as being. This fantastic young woman has suffered tons and tons throughout her life, more than mnay people will ever know.  Her death shows how much love she brought to her family in her life.  Therefore, Antigone has many strong and distinct qualities about her that seem very important in the wonder play by Sophocles and these qualities should be treasured and remembered.

The Choice

Have you ever wondered if shows and movies do change the way we think and act today?  Well shows like Teen Mom and 16 & Pregnant, according to researchers, are being held responsible for the rise in teen pregnancy rates across the globe.  Teen pregnancy rates have hit an all time high a few years back, and now the government is taking precautions as to what these shows can do to affect teenage thoughts.
In my opinion, it all boils down to one choice to put you at the risk to get pregnant or to play it safe.  If teens saw how hard their fellow teens work being moms, then maybe it would give them a shock of how things could end up for them if they make the wrong choice.  Based on what I’ve personally watched on these shows I’ve seen nothing that has traumatized me, it's basically just another teenage reality show.  In case you didn't already know these shows are about female high-school students who have had a baby, and how they become mothers at such an early age.
It's unbelievable how so many teenagers can go out and get pregnant just so they can get the attention of the media from these shows.  To me this is a very true fact, but in an article I read the spokesperson for the National Campaign says "Entertainment media is one of the nation's favorite punching bags, but we have to acknowledge that when we're talking about teen pregnancies media can be and often is a force for good" (Bentley).
Also, some people claim to agree that 16 & Pregnant and Teen Mom glamorize teen pregnancy as if it's the right choice and should be the life for everyone.  Which the truth is it isn't the right choice, and parenting should be put off until marriage.  I agree that teen pregnancy is glamorized in these shows; to me all it shows is look at me and my baby.  According to the article I read things are believed to be different, he says, "Some critics say these shows glamorize teen pregnancy," he continued, "but our survey data shows that's not the case -- that not only do they not glamorize it, but teens who have seen it suggest it makes the realities of teen parenthood more real to them" (Bentley).  To me the life of these teenage mothers is somewhat glamorized for their lives to be filmed week by week.
So, is teen pregnancy the right or wrong choice?  Should these shows be on television for entertainment, or watched carefully for the good of teenager's thoughts and minds?  In my brain these shows should be monitored carefully, but should not be canceled if they are reducing teen pregnancy rates.
